Make the college dreams of Mission High seniors come true!
April 16, 2020 – The final year of high school for seniors across the country has changed dramatically in the last month. Amidst the fear and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, for many Mission High seniors there remains a bright spot: attending college in the fall.
Mission High has an extraordinary track record of preparing students for college. Students like Manuel, an asylum seeker from Honduras who decided to only apply to SFSU so that he could live at home and help his mom with her house cleaning jobs. Through the AVID class at Mission, he became aware of other opportunities available and was admitted to UC Davis, where he will study computer programming. But Manuel does not have the means to pay the $500 deposit for his dorm.
In the next four weeks, students have to make deposits for tuition and room & board in order to secure a spot in their college class. There are over 40 Mission High seniors whose families are now struggling to come up with the $150 – $550 of deposits due to layoffs and the economic challenges caused by the Coronavirus outbreak.
The Mission High Foundation has established The Brightspot Fund to pay these deposits and meet this urgent need. While these students will receive financial aid and scholarships, these awards will not be available until the fall. They need our help to bridge the gap.
Most of these students will be the first members of their families to attend college. They have worked hard to achieve this goal and it would be heartbreaking if a lack of only a few hundred dollars negates years of hard work, and stands in the way of them being able to attend college in the fall.
Your gift of any size will make a critical difference and will go directly to funding college admission deposits for Mission High Class of 2020 students facing financial difficulties due to the effects of the coronavirus outbreak. You may use this “Donate” link OR
